Alliance for Incarcerated Women and Crain Unit Celebrate Mother’s Day with Joy, Dignity, and Community

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 12, 2025

Gatesville, TX — The Alliance for Incarcerated Women (AIW), in collaboration with Warden Lindsay Lewis and the staff of the Christina Melton Crain Unit, hosted a heartfelt Mother’s Day celebration on May 12, 2025, honoring incarcerated women and their families with a day of joy, connection, and care.

Held at the Crain Unit—Texas’s largest women’s prison and home to over 2,000 women—the event brought together more than 75 participants for a special day that underscored the importance of family and dignity, even in the most challenging circumstances. Chick-fil-A generously donated food for all attendees, while the facility provided drinks and light refreshments, creating a warm and celebratory atmosphere.

“This Mother’s Day event reminds us that every woman deserves to feel seen, valued, and loved—especially mothers who are doing their best to stay connected to their children while incarcerated,” said Warden Lindsay Lewis, who has been a trusted partner in AIW’s work.

The celebration featured a gift table with a range of activities and creative materials selected to support bonding between mothers and their children. AIW volunteers sourced engaging gifts from Walmart, including puzzles, art kits, card games, books, and bead sets. Each item was chosen with care to foster connection, creativity, and fun. From colorful stamp kits and classic board games like UNO and Connect 4, to bracelet-making sets and heartfelt coloring books, the gifts were designed to honor the strength and spirit of motherhood.

“This event is about more than just a holiday,” said Julia Keleher, of AIW. “It’s about restoring a sense of humanity. When we support mothers inside, we support entire families on the outside.”

The Alliance for Incarcerated Women remains committed to advocating for dignity, connection, and healing for women in prison. Mother’s Day is one powerful example of what’s possible when correctional leaders, advocates, and communities come together to honor the people behind the prison walls.
